Understanding Proxy Workflows
A proxy workflow is an editing technique where lightweight, lower-resolution copies of your media are used during the editing process, with the final output linked back to the original high-resolution files. This approach dramatically improves editing performance, enables remote collaboration, and reduces storage requirements during the creative phase of post-production.
What Are Proxy Files?
Proxy files are lower-resolution, lower-bitrate versions of your original camera media created specifically for editing. A typical proxy might be 1280x720 ProRes Proxy or H.264 at a modest bitrate, compared to the original 4K or 8K RAW files from the camera. The proxy maintains the same timecode, clip names, and metadata as the original, allowing the editing software to link between the two seamlessly.
The relationship between proxy and original is maintained through matching metadata, typically timecode, reel name, and clip name. When the edit is complete, the NLE relinks from proxy media to original media, and the full-resolution conform happens automatically. Color grading and finishing are done with the original high-resolution files, preserving maximum quality for the final deliverable.
The concept is not new; offline/online editing workflows have existed since the tape era. Modern proxy workflows are simply the digital evolution of the same principle: make creative decisions with lightweight media, then apply those decisions to the highest-quality source for the final product.
When to Use a Proxy Workflow
Proxy workflows are most beneficial when working with high-resolution footage (4K and above), computationally demanding codecs (RAW, LOG), or on hardware that cannot play the native media smoothly. If your editing workstation struggles with real-time playback of native footage, proxies restore smooth performance and eliminate the frustrating lag that slows creative decision-making.
Remote editing is another compelling use case. When editors work from home or distributed locations, transferring full-resolution media is impractical. Proxy files are small enough to transfer over standard internet connections, enabling editors to start working within hours rather than waiting days for full-resolution transfers.
Multi-camera projects benefit significantly from proxy workflows. Playing back multiple streams of 4K simultaneously requires extremely powerful hardware. With proxies, even a modest laptop can smoothly play a four-camera multicam sequence, and the editor can focus on creative decisions rather than battling technical limitations.
Creating and Managing Proxies
Most NLEs (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer) have built-in proxy generation capabilities. The NLE creates proxy files from your original media, maintaining the metadata links automatically. This is the simplest approach and works well for most projects where the edit team uses a single NLE.
For larger productions or multi-NLE workflows, a dedicated media management tool or transcoding application can generate proxies with more control over format, resolution, and naming. This approach is preferred when proxies need to be shared across multiple applications or facilities, as it ensures consistent proxy specifications regardless of which NLE each editor uses.
Storage management for proxies is straightforward but requires organization. Keep proxy media separate from original media with a clear folder structure. Include the proxy resolution or format in the folder or file naming convention to prevent confusion. When the project is complete and the final conform is done, proxy media can be deleted to free storage space.
Conforming: From Proxy to Full Resolution
Conforming, also called relinking or onlining, is the process of reconnecting the edited timeline from proxy media to original full-resolution media. In most NLEs, this is a straightforward operation: the software matches clips by timecode and filename, then replaces the proxy references with links to the original files.
Problems arise when metadata does not match between proxy and original. If file names were changed, if timecode was altered during proxy creation, or if the original media was reorganized on disk, the conform may fail partially or completely. Maintaining strict metadata consistency throughout the workflow is essential for a smooth conform.
After conforming, verify the timeline plays correctly with the full-resolution media. Check for missing media, incorrect relinks, and any visual differences between the proxy and original (which can occur if color space handling differs). This verification step catches conform errors before they become problems in color grading or final delivery.
