Track time on a task

Updated September 2, 20262 min read

RecReview tracks time with a timer attached to a task. There is no timesheet to fill in later — start it when you begin, stop it when you’re done.

Running timer showing the video code and elapsed time

Start and stop the timer

  1. Click the play button in the task card’s footer. Or right-click the card and choose Start timer.
  2. The elapsed time appears in the card footer and in the header, next to the video code.
  3. Click the same button, or right-click and choose Stop timer, to finish.

You can also start the timer from inside the task panel, on a version, or on a single subtask.

Note: Only one timer runs at a time. Starting a timer somewhere else stops the one already running, so your hours never double-count.

If the timer refuses to start

Starting from a card needs a video attached to the task. Without one you get “Could not start timer: task without linked video.” Upload or link a version first, then try again.

Where the hours show up

  • Card footer — total time logged on that task.
  • Task panel — the Time section pairs Elapsed with the Estimate and lists each work session.
  • Table view — the Worked, Estimated and Remaining columns, all sortable.
  • MetricsHours logged for the period, Hours by client, Team productivity per member, Avg hours / video and Estimate accuracy.

The timer moves your workflow

With the default automations on, starting a timer does more than count seconds:

  • A task in To start moves to In progress.
  • A task in the Planned phase advances out of it.

Both are switches you can turn off in Workspace SettingsAutomations, under Built-in automations.

Tip: Workspace admins and owners get a notification when a teammate starts or stops a timer, so you can see who is on what without asking.

What’s next

Set Estimated hours on a task and the panel will compare it against the time actually logged. To time one step at a time, see Break a task into subtasks.
